Participants will increase knowledge of the basics of neurotransmission, major classifications of psychotropic medications, and selected issues associated with use of psychotropic medications.


Presentation I will include a brief overview of the basis of mechanism of all psychotropic medications and a summary of common psychosocial issues associated with client adherence to a psychotropic medication schedule. Several therapeutic responses to these issues will be discussed. Medications used to treat Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD will be discussed, with several case studies presented.  Common side effects will also be discussed. PowerPoint slides, verbal presentation, questions and answers, and handouts will be used to accomplish educational objectives.



CEU OBJECTIVES

At the end of these two presentations the participant will be able to:
  1.  Gain appreciation of the methods by which psychotropic medications work.
  2.  Describe potential responses and/or side effects of various psychotropic medications.
  3.  Identify selected medication treatment issues and devise therapeutic responses.
  4.  Describe psychotropic medications commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and PTSD.



PRESENTER: Noreen Brady, PhD, APRN-BC, LPCC-S

Noreen Brady PhD, APRN-BC, LPCC-S has been an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with prescriptive privileges since 2001 and an APN since 1982.  In addition to clinical practice, she has taught Psychiatric Nursing at Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University to undergraduate and graduate nursing students from 1996 to 2009. Dr. Brady also designed and conducted the first Psychopharmacology course for the Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program students in 2010 and 2011.  She has held multiple clinical, educational, and administrative positions since beginning her practice in 1975. She is also a licensed Ohio LPCC with supervisory endorsement.  Throughout her years in practice Dr. Brady has been impressed by the critical and complex role medications can play in the functioning and recovery of our clients.
