"Art Therapy Disaster Response; Hope, Healing, & Humanity"

Joseph Scarce, PhD, ATR-BC

Joseph Scarce, PhD, ATR-BC is an assistant professor of Art Therapy at the University of Tampa's BA in Art Therapy Program. He is the owner of Joe's Art Time LLC, serving many organizations in the Tampa Region, including SUD / addiction, veterans, oncology units, behavioral psychiatric hospitals, foster care, and the unhoused community. Scarce has served as President of the Florida Art Therapy Association in 2016 and in 2023. He provided leadership in art therapy response to the Orlando Youth Alliance after the Pulse Night Club Shooting and helped guide response efforts to the Parkland shooting. Additionally, he was responsible for leading art therapy response efforts for Hurricanes Irma, Maria, Michael, Ian, and Milton. Finally, Scarce currently serves as the Editor and author of the new text, Art Therapy in Response to Natural Disasters, Mass Violence, and Crises.

Scarce's keynote will provide a general overview of how he initially came to be a part of disaster response and art therapy, as well as how to respond to disasters using art therapy. Most importantly, attendees will learn about a number of issues within this realm including: awareness of general self-care; preparation; safety concerns; and challenges with researching art therapy in disaster response.
